Newborn - Bathing

Until the umbilical cord falls off, you should give your baby a sponge bath using a wash cloth with mild soap, shampoo, and water. Babies can be very slippery, so it is helpful to have all of your supplies within easy reach before you start! Most babies only need to be bathed every other day or every 2 days during the newborn period. Once the cord has fallen off, you can give your baby a bath in a small bathtub. Make sure the water is not too hot by testing the temperature of the water before placing your baby in the tub. Do not leave your child unattended in the bathtub!

The normal skin peeling you may notice on the hands and feet will resolve on its own within several weeks. After two weeks of age it is fine to use lotions on the skin as needed. It is not necessary to use any diaper cream or powder unless you see signs of irritation or redness in the diaper area.
